| Abstract | In this work multitemporal remote sensing techniques were used to analyze alterations in the vegetation cover over a period of 17 years (1977 to 1994)in the "Rio Grande" basin, located in Ubatuba county, North litoral of Sao Paulo State. Landsat-TM images from the years of 1986, 1992, 1993 and 1994 were used in this analyses. Archive aerial photographs, obtained in 1977, were used to evaluate the vegetation cover and compare with the vegetation cover evaluate using non conventional aerial photographs, obtained in 1992. The digital image processing was performed using the supervised maximum liklyhood classifier. Images from 1986, 1993 and 1994 were used to classify the vegetation cover in the basin, while the 1992 image, was used to compare with the aerial photographs obtained in 1992. It was observed that between the period of 1977 and 1992 the basin lost 4.08 of its vegetation cover; while, between the period of the 1992 and 1994 a lost of 1.28 was observed, which roughly corresponds to a lost that was twice as much as the one observed during the first period (1977 to 1992). The basin area that is above 100 meter of the sea level is a preservation area and, therefore, protected by law since 20 August 1977, which reduces remarkably the area that is available for human use or activities. However, there is a great need for a plan that enables an adequate use of the unprotected basin area. | |||
